What is the difference between a Nutritionist and Dietitian?

Dietitian: 4 year undergrad courses focusing on anatomy, biology, nutrition, overall well being. If you complete all the core courses for the internship, you receive a certificate for completing the DPD’s. They then apply for a very competitive internship. My school accepts 12 and over 120 applied this year .After they complete the 9-12 month unpaid internship (that you pay thousands to participate in), they study for a test called the RD exam. In this exam, you have to know everything from what exactly each vitamin is doing in your system to how to treat the protein requirement for a burn victim. If you pass the exam, you are a Dietitian.

Nutritionist: 4 year undergrad courses focused in (depending on the school) nutrition, biology, anatomy, and overall well being. Once you graduate, in most states, you can technically call yourself a nutritionist. There are some states that require a masters to be considered a nutritionist.

I have friends that went through undergrad with me. My school did not offer all the DPD’s so I am in the process for completing them now. So far the only difference in our education is in my DPD classes, I learn more medical information and how to treat it. I am also going to be learning more food management information.

Without my dietitian program completion, I am not able to work at a lot of the jobs I’m interested in.

Dietitians can describe a diet for your need. This includes weight loss, diabetes, burn victims, cystic fibrosis patients, and any other medical situation. They have gone through the training to do so.

Nutritionist can help with weight loss, knowing the benefits of foods, that kind of thing. A lot of nutritionist also teach about eating behavior and helping the community.
