Dear Renata

Dear Renata: I have been unsuccessfully trying to lose weight for the past 8 months, I try to eat very little and I exercise at least two times each week.  I have no idea why I cannot lose a pound? Please help!

CJ

Dear CJ:  You are making a mistake by eating only a little bit, the key to successful weight loss is to eat throughout the day, and never go under 1200 calories.  Your exercise should be increased to at least four times per week, and make sure you are doing aerobic activity each time you go to the gym.  If you need more help please feel free to call or email me anytime.

Dear Renata: I am 65 years old and have a low thyroid.  My doctor told me that e to help increase my metabolism, however I cant afford the membership for the gym at this time, do you have any suggestions?

HM

Dear HM:  I suggest you make an appointment to see me for a nutrition assessment to discuss your thyroid condition.  As far as the gym is concerned anyone 62 and over with Empire or Oxford health insurance is entitled to a free membership through the silver sneaker program.  If you do not have these insurances then you are entitled to a reduced fee membership.  You can get more information about this from the front desk staff.  Good luck!

Dear Renata:

My son is 8 years old, and has been overweight since he was about 2, now that he is getting older kids are starting to make fun of him.  This really upsets him, but he refuses to give up junk food.  How can I handle this situation?

LY

Dear LY:

Your son is still young, he needs guidance from you.  If you set an example for him by not having "junk" food in the house that is the first step.  You may also try seeking help from a child psychologist.

Dear Renata:

My husband is 45 years old, and has high blood pressure, the doctor said he needs to cut down on his salt intake and lose weight.  My husband refuses to do either, is there a way I can convince him to change his lifestyle?

NP

Dear NP:

The only way he will change is to is if he wants to, and is willing and ready to make changes.  I know you mean well but its really up to him.  Sometimes when we force people into changes they are not ready for we actually make them step backwards.  Don't push him too much, he will eventually come around.

Dear Renata:

I am in my early thirties and have been trying to lose weight for the past year unsuccessfully.  I dont eat junk food, and I exercise every other day.  Yet I cant seem to lose weight, what can I do?

LS

Dear LS:

Even though you do not eat junk food and seem to be getting enough exercise, you will not lose weight unless the ratio of your carbs, protein, and fat is in the right ratio.   Your portion sizes must also be looked at, even though you say you are eating healthy if you do not control portions you will not lose weight.  Also do you eat every two to four hours? If you dont then your metabolism may be affected in a way that will stop your body from losing weight.

Dear Renata:

I am a male in my early twenties and I have been trying to build my muscles with no success.  I try to eat a diet high in protein, low in fat and carbohydrates, and I weight train every day for at least an hour and a half.  I am at my wits end, please help me!

RK

Dear RK:

In order to build muscle you need a diet high in carbs, which are used along with fat as a fuel during weight training.  Protein is needed in smaller amounts, because it is used for repair and some building of muscles.  A good ratio for you would be 55% carbohydrate, 15% protein, and 30% fat.  Good luck to you !!
